3 employees quit Civic Center staff

LIMA — The Veterans Memorial Civic Center is preparing for a busy weekend without three staff members.

Three people, more than 25 percent of the staff of 11, abruptly quit Monday, Civic Center Executive Director Cindy Wood confirmed Thursday.

This weekend's events include the Lima Warriors Poker Championships on Friday, Saturday and Sunday; the Elvis Lives! show Saturday and Hofeller, Hiatt & Clark and Nitza's annual garage sale Friday and Saturday.

“We're making it happen. We've all adjusted our schedules and we're working together,” Wood said. “We have some relationships established with some community partners and we're adjusting those. We have everything covered.”

The hourly employees worked in event services. They had worked at the Civic Center between seven and 10 years. Wood declined comment on specific details on why the employees left; the Civic Center board will take up the issue during an executive session at its regular meeting planned for Wednesday.

Wood did say the employees' decision to quit can be attributed partly to budget and staffing decisions made in response to severe funding cuts by Allen County commissioners in 2009. At that time, all employees had benefits cut, but some were cut more than others, Wood said.

Also, the Civic Center entered into contracts with the Allen County Sheriff's Office to use jail trusties and the Allen County Board of Developmental Disabilities for some tasks.

“I think that history is part of the issue at hand,” Wood said. “You do the best you can with the dollars you have. The board is aware of the situation. They are concerned with human resources issues and want to be fair to employees, and they're also concerned about maintaining and upgrading the services we have here.”
