Each general election, The Lima News provides this section profiling the candidates and issues. The Lima News sent questionnaires to every candidate in Allen, Auglaize, Hardin, Putnam and Van Wert counties for this election section. Candidates had the opportunity to give biographical information and discuss major issues in their races. Candidates also had an option to submit a photograph. Only names and residences identify candidates who did not return a questionnaire. Leipsic - MayorKevin J. BentonParty: Non-partisanResidence: South Orchard Drive, LeipsicJames R. RussellParty: RepublicanResidence: West Main Street, LeipsicAge: 67Relevant experience: Served on Leipsic council for six years; served as Leipsic’s mayor for six years; employed as Leipsic’s village administrator for more than 23 years; member of Putnam County Community Improvement Corp. board for 18 years, serving as past president and presently secretary-treasurer of that board; served as a Leipsic volunteer fireman for 25 years.Education: Graduated from Leipsic High School; attended Ohio State University.Years living in area: 65Major issues: To protect the property values of the residents of the village, blighted and abandoned structures must be either restored or eliminated. When you are part of a community, there are obligations and rules that must be followed. What you do on your property should not have an adverse effect on your neighbor’s property value. The rules must be enforced. As we exit the present recession, Leipsic is at a crossroad for future economic development. I believe the village should continue to build on the foundation is has invested in to attract its present industries. These investments should be used to create additional job growth and industrial development. The tax revenues from this additional growth will enable Leipsic to provide better services for its residents. For decades, Leipsic has exported its brightest young adults to better paying jobs elsewhere. With the development of good jobs locally, some of these young adults will remain in the Leipsic community to become its future leaders. We must continue to provide the community with the best possible park and recreational facilities. Maintenance of our present facilities and the establishment of new facilities should become a priority. While we should remember our history and learn from it and our mistakes, we must be ready to handle the challenges of the future. Bring on tomorrow!
