The Lima News sent questionnaires to representatives for every issue on the ballot in Allen, Auglaize, Hardin, Putnam and Van Wert counties for this election section. Representatives had the opportunity to discuss the major issues with their issue. Only basic information from the board of elections identifies organizations that did not return a questionnaire yet. We continue to receive more questionnaires every day, so check back here soon to see the latest submitted answers.

Levy sought: 2.37 mill renewal tax levy for five years

Purpose: Emergency requirements

How much will it raise per year for your organization? $451,863 per year

Cost of the levy to taxpayers: $36.29 per year for a $50,000 home; $72.58 for a $100,000 home.

Why does your organization need the levy? This levy was originally passed in 1980 and has been renewed five times since. The funds generated from the levy will be used for general operating expenses. Ottawa-Glandorf schools has received the same amount from two emergency operating levies ($451,863) since 1980. The funds generated from this levy will be used for operating expenses, including textbooks, educational supplies, educational equipment, personnel costs, utilities and transportation. The only local funds we utilize to operate our schools are from this emergency operating levy and a 0.5 percent income tax. With the reduction in state funding (3 percent over the last two years for the O-G schools), the reduction in the collection of the income tax due to the poor economy, coupled with rising costs of doing business, we need this levy just to maintain our current operational expenses and our academic successes.

What will happen if the levy fails? Since this request is a renewal of two existing levies, if the levy is defeated, Ottawa-Glandorf schools will be forced to look at alternatives to reduce expenditures. This will be a very difficult task, given the fact that we already cut 16 positions from our staff over the past six years. If this levy fails, we will have the opportunity to seek its renewal in the next election. We are hopeful that the taxpayers understand the value that the Ottawa-Glandorf Local School District places on education and will respond positively in the November election.
