Each general election, The Lima News provides this section profiling the candidates and issues. The Lima News sent questionnaires to every candidate in Allen, Auglaize, Hardin, Putnam and Van Wert counties for this election section. Candidates had the opportunity to give biographical information and discuss major issues in their races. Candidates also had an option to submit a photograph. Only names and residences identify candidates who did not return a questionnaire. Van Wert - 4th Ward CouncilPeter H. WeirParty: Non-partisanResidence: South Tyler Street, Van WertAge: 51Campaign website: weirforyou.comRelevant experience: Military leadership.Education: Bachelor’s degree in computer science; currently attending Rhodes State for quality engineering degree.Years living in area: 1970-1983 and then 2009-present, 15 years cumulativeMajor issues: We need to stimulate neighborhood economy through reinvesting in our youth (through paid community clean-ups, paid through a not-for-profit collective organization fund raiser) and endorsing a “shop local” ideal. We should bring the many wonderful organizations in Van Wert together into one common goal of neighborhood pride and awareness, enabling us to come together as a community. Community pride through the cleaning up of our neighborhoods and streets will help us attract new businesses, retain existing businesses and market us to potential retailers, developers and business owners. We need consistent participation in the organizations that are helping our community through political and economic endeavors, such as attending Community Involvement Corporation meetings, Main St. Inc., meetings and serving as a board member on such organizations as the Airport Commission. Knowledge is power.
