The Lima News sent questionnaires to representatives for every issue on the ballot in Allen, Auglaize, Hardin, Putnam and Van Wert counties for this election section. Representatives had the opportunity to discuss the major issues with their issue. Only basic information from the board of elections identifies organizations that did not return a questionnaire yet. Levy sought: 1 mill replacement tax levy for five years
Purpose: Fire and emergency services for Cairo-Monroe Township Fire Department
How much will it raise per year for your organization? $47,956
Cost of the levy to taxpayers: $50 per year for a $50,000 home, $100 for $100,000 home
Why does your organization need the levy? The Cairo-Monroe volunteer fire department needs this replacement levy for the operation, maintenance and training for the department. This levy goes to the basic upkeep and day-to-day expense for fire and EMS services. The funds also go to the service contracts with the neighboring fire departments of Beaverdam and Columbus Grove to help with emergencies within the township. The replacement levy is not a new tax and would cost a homeowner $100 a year for a property valued at $100,000. This levy would continue to keep fire and EMS services local for our township.
What will happen if the levy fails? If this levy fails, our first line of protection for fire and EMS could be lost. Without our own safety services, the township would have to contract with neighboring departments for all emergencies. Wait times for response to an emergency could become longer without our own safety services remaining local. Without the funds from the levy, the department would have a hard time maintaining the firehouse and providing operating supplies to run the department.
