Each general election, The Lima News provides this section profiling the candidates and issues. The Lima News sent questionnaires to every candidate in Allen, Auglaize, Hardin, Putnam and Van Wert counties for this election section. Candidates had the opportunity to give biographical information and discuss major issues in their races. Candidates also had an option to submit a photograph. Only names and residences identify candidates who did not return a questionnaire. Amanda Township - TrusteeBrad J. Core (incumbent)Party: RepublicanResidence: South Defiance Trail, SpencervilleAge: 43Relevant experience: Amanda Township trustee for eight years, currently serving as chairman; past president and current executive committee member of Allen County Township Association; currently serving as vice chairman of advisory committee for food, agricultural and biological engineering at Ohio State University; currenlty serving on advisory committee for civil engineering technology and concrete technology at Rhodes State College; five years experience as engineer for Allen County Engineer’s Office; five years experience as assistant professor of civil engineering technology at Rhodes State College; more than 10 years experience as engineering consultant; self-employed business owner who is available to the township 24/7.Education: Bachelor’s degree in agricultural engineering in 1991, Ohio State University; licensed professional civil engineer in Ohio and Indiana; licensed professional surveyor in Ohio; certified asphalt mix designer by National Center for Asphalt Technology; certified concrete mix designer by Ohio Ready Mixed Concrete Association; American Concrete Institute Certtified Testing Technician Grade I.Years living in area: 43Major issues: The biggest issue facing Amanda Township today is the constant reduction in the amount of money being returned to Amanda Township by the state. Local government funds are being phased out by the state. I represented Amanda Township and the Ohio Township Association at a news conference at the State Capitol Building that dealt with this issue. Additionally, I testified before the state budget committee about the importance of local government funds to Ohio townships. The second-biggest issue facing Amanda Township is the elimination of the inheritance tax in Ohio. Over my tenure as a trustee, the inheritance tax has been a significant source of revenue for Amanda Township. It has amounted to the better part of $100,000 in the past eight years. As a citizen, I am no fan of inheritance taxes or any other “death taxes.” As a trustee, it has been an important source of revenue that has helped the Township maintain equipment and facilities. The third-biggest issue facing Amanda Township is the skyrocketing costs of asphalt, tar, stone, fuel, and salt that are vital to the maintenance of township roads. When I became a trustee eight years ago, Amanda Township had a negative carryover balance and significant debt. The other trustees and the fiscal officer embraced my desire to look at every single dollar expended. Today, only eight years later, Amanda Township has a positive carryover balance, no debt, a new maintenance building and facilities and equipment that are in excellent condition. John WhitlingParty: RepublicanResidence: Sunderland Road, SpencervilleAge: 58Relevant experience: 16 years as an Amanda Township trustee; 5 years as Zoning Inspector, Amanda Township; Owner of Whitling & Sons Construction; Real estate agent with Oakridge Realty.Education: Spencerville High School; Ohio State University; Hondros College.Years living in area: 30Major issues: The trustees contacted out of state workers to complete repairs and structure alterations to our township house. Did not get proper permits to do this. Let’s keep our tax dollars in the township or at least the state. I would try to improve the recycling program to help the community more.
