Each general election, The Lima News provides this section profiling the candidates and issues. The Lima News sent questionnaires to each organization with a levy on the ballot in Allen, Auglaize, Hardin, Putnam and Van Wert counties for this election section. Only names and basic information from the board of elections identify groups that not return a questionnaire. Perry Township - 1 mill and 1.5 mill renewalLevy sought: 1 mill and 1.5 mill renewalPurpose: Fire and emergency expensesHow much will it raise per year for your organization? $78,381 from 1 mill; $117,590 from 1.5 millCost of the levy to taxpayers: For a $50,000 home: $17.50 for 1 mill, $26.25 for 1.5 mills; For a $100,000 home: $35 for 1 mill, $52.50 for 1.5 millsWhy does your organization need the levy? The Perry Fire Department utilizes the tax dollars from levies for equipment, maintenance and replacement of fire trucks and rescue squads. In addition, the levies pay for personnel, training, utilities, fuel, fire hydrants, building maintenance, safety equipment and insurance.What will happen if the levy fails? Failure of these replacement levies would place tremendous financial burden on Perry Fire Department. Perry Fire Department runs approximately 1,000 EMS calls per year and about 400 fire calls. The department has to live within its budget. Like most businesses maintenance is generally the first cut. Then, there would be the possibility of reduction of personnel and services. These cuts could increase response time to calls for help. Also such funding cuts may reduce training and replacement of qualified responders.Submitted by Norman Capps, trustee
