Each general election, The Lima News provides this section profiling the candidates and issues. The Lima News sent questionnaires to each organization with a levy on the ballot in Allen, Auglaize, Hardin, Putnam and Van Wert counties for this election section. Only names and basic information from the board of elections identify groups that not return a questionnaire. Village of Ottawa - 1.65 percent income tax replacementLevy sought: 1.65 percent income tax replacementPurpose: To provide funds for the purposes of general municipal operations, maintenance, new equipment, extension and enlargement of municipal services and facilities, capital improvements and retirement of notes and bonded indebtedness. How much will it raise per year for your organization? $1.87 millionCost of the levy to taxpayers: $495 on $30,000 of earned income a year; $990 on $60,000 of earned income a year. Why does your organization need the levy? The village of Ottawa has endured loss of revenue of nearly $1 million a year due to loss of employment in Ottawa, state funding cuts and unprecedented low interest earnings on investments. These funds are used to provide services such as police protection, fire protection, street repairs and maintenance, street lighting, street cleaning, leaf pick-up, parks, swimming pool, tree trimming and planting, mosquito spraying, mowing village properties, zoning, economic development, general government, equipment and maintenance, vehicle purchase and repair, land and building maintenance, land acquisition for economic development, sidewalks, snow removal, spring clean-up, storm sewer cleaning and maintenance. What will happen if the levy fails? If the income tax levy fails, the services mentioned in the preceding paragraph will have to be prioritized and deep cuts made to the services.Submitted by Barbara J. Brickner, clerk-treasurer
