Each general election, The Lima News provides this section profiling the candidates and issues. The Lima News sent questionnaires to every candidate in Allen, Auglaize, Hardin, Putnam and Van Wert counties for this election section. Candidates had the opportunity to give biographical information and discuss major issues in their races. Candidates also had an option to submit a photograph. Only names and residences identify candidates who did not return a questionnaire. St. Marys - Council PresidentDaniel R. HoelscherParty: RepublicanResidence: West South Street, St. MarysAge: 64Relevant experience: I served one term as 3rd Ward councilman, three terms on council-at-large and six terms as president of council, all for the City of St. Marys. I have worked for 38 years for Crown Equipment Corporation, and I am currently a production planner. I am a life-long member of Holy Rosary Parish, and I am a member of the Knights of Columbus and American Legion.Years living in area: I was born and raised on a farm outside the city and have lived within the city limits since 1971.Major issues: The major issue before the City of St. Marys is the same as all the local communities, the economy. The city has been doing well because of our diverse manufacturing base and a developing commercial center. It is important to continue to promote the city and to also work with our current manufacturing plants and commercial business to keep them in the city. We need to do everything we can to bring people downtown to support the shops and restaurants along South, Spring and High streets. I have enjoyed my time with the City of St. Marys and would like to continue to serve its citizens.
