Each general election, The Lima News provides this section profiling the candidates and issues. The Lima News sent questionnaires to every candidate in Allen, Auglaize, Hardin, Putnam and Van Wert counties for this election section. Candidates had the opportunity to give biographical information and discuss major issues in their races. Candidates also had an option to submit a photograph. Only names and residences identify candidates who did not return a questionnaire. Ada - Council(Choose two)Beth Fenton (incumbent)Party: IndependentResidence: North Gilbert Street, AdaAge: 48Relevant experience: Current member of Ada council; director, Keep Hardin County Beautiful.Education: Juris doctor, Ohio Northern University College of Law; bachelor’s degree, Cleveland State University.Years living in area: 17Major issues: One of the issues facing the Village of Ada is its aging wastewater treatment plant. The original wastewater treatment plant dates back to the 1950s. Ada’s village council recently considered three options for improving Ada’s wastewater treatment plant and selected a $10 million proposal to update Ada’s existing plant. Updating the plant is important to the quality of life for the residents of Ada as well as for economic development.Earlier this year, Ada’s council passed a tax levy that raised the local income tax rate. This tax raises monies for the Ada Police Department and frees up funds that can be used for street maintenance. Having a sound infrastructure not only provides greater safety for the community, but it is more visually appealing for residents and area businesses. Finally, Ada council recently passed a property, buildings and structures code for homes and businesses within the village. The requirements of this code include, for example, having clearly visible address numbers. This requirement allows the police and fire departments to quickly and easily find the correct location where help is needed. This code is paramount to the health, safety and welfare of the residents of Ada.
