Each general election, The Lima News provides this section profiling the candidates and issues. The Lima News sent questionnaires to every candidate in Allen, Auglaize, Hardin, Putnam and Van Wert counties for this election section. Candidates had the opportunity to give biographical information and discuss major issues in their races. Candidates also had an option to submit a photograph. Only names and residences identify candidates who did not return a questionnaire. Fort Shawnee - MayorPete R. MariottiParty: Non-partisanResidence: West Hume Road, LimaMajor issues: The current financial crisis of the Village of Fort Shawnee that was brought to ligh t over a year ago is a result of a series of errors and mismanagement that occurred over the past several years. The lack of or ineffective methods and systems of managing the business of the Fort resulted in spending levels that exceeded revenues. Conducting business as usual without effectively managing finances and services has resulted in the general fund budget deficit of $130,000 by the end of this year. The 2012 deficit is projected at $31,000 in spite of the interim actions by council to significantly reduce expenditures and along with the state’s reduction of funds to the village, the total deficit is forecasted to be $89,000. Additional revenue will be needed to resolve the current financial state of the village. Although the mayor’s position is listed as part time I am committed to work the hours that are required to manage the business in an effective and efficient manner. Effective methods and systems will be developed along with consistent follow-up to ensure adherence. I will personally conduct an in-depth review of village employee responsibilities for opportunities to improve services and value for the residents tax dollars. All expenditures will be monitored on a consistent basis to ensure that approved budget forecasts are achieved. I believe that the Fort can be returned to health with services that represent value for the dollars, services that exceed what has been provided in past years.
