The Lima News sent questionnaires to representatives for every issue on the ballot in Allen, Auglaize, Hardin, Putnam and Van Wert counties for this election section. Representatives had the opportunity to discuss the major issues with their issue. Only basic information from the board of elections identifies organizations that did not return a questionnaire yet. We continue to receive more questionnaires every day, so check back here soon to see the latest submitted answers.

Levy sought: 0.7 mill new tax levy for five years

Purpose: Current expenses, to replace loss in operating funds due to state cuts and poor economy

How much will it raise per year for your organization? $65,000 per year

Cost of the levy to taxpayers: $11 per year for $50,000 home; $22 for $100,000 home

Why does your organization need the levy? The Forest-Jackson Public Library is experiencing a cut in its operating funds, which come from state tax dollars through the Public Library Fund.  In 2007, the library received $110,045 in state funding. In 2011, the library expects to receive $81,772.

Levy funds will help to give financial stability to the library, as well as enable us to add books, DVDs, audiobooks and more to our collection.  It will also restore lost hours of operation and better staff the library during busy hours.  Salaries have been frozen for three years, and modest salary adjustments may be made.  Levy funds would also allow the library board to re-implement building maintenance projects.  Brickwork and a new handicapped-accessible entry would be at the top of the list of projects that would be completed.

Librarians have seen the need for an after-school homework help center and computer classes. Levy funds would enable these projects.

What will happen if the levy fails? If the levy fails, the library board of trustees will have tough decisions to make. Hours of operation and staff hours would likely be cut. Spending on library materials would also have to be cut.
