MILLER CITY — Thirteen engineering and computer science students from Ohio Northern University conducted a Science, Technology, Engineering and Math Academy for fourth- and fifth-grade pupils at Miller City Elementary School on Tuesday.
During the event, the pupils participated in five different hour-long workshops taught by ONU students. Workshops involved a project management exercise utilizing gum drop and tooth picks, the construction of a bridge with spaghetti and masking tape, testing of sail boat prototypes, design of an electric circuit and the development of a hover craft.
The workshops were conducted by students enrolled in engineering education, a unique program requiring a bachelor’s degree in general engineering and a teaching certificate in high school math.
Graduates of the program have found themselves in teaching positions in local junior and senior high STEM programs, training programs within local industry and graduate school.
