Lorain County Safe Community Coalition reminds fans that while the Super Bowl Sunday is one of America’s biggest and most entertaining national sporting events, it is also one of the nation’s most dangerous days on the roadways due to impaired driving.

During 2013 in Lorain County, 81 percent of all deadly crashes on the roads involved alcohol or drugs. In preparation to cheer on your favorite team in the Super Bowl, be sure to recruit a designated driver.

“We make plans with our friends for the big game… whose house we’ll be watching from, who will bring chips and dip, and who will be the grill master. The same thought should go into making a plan for a sober ride home,” said Katie Bevan, Lorain County Safe Community Coalition Member and Health Educator at Lorain County General Health District.

The Lorain County Safe Community Coalition encourages all fans to:

Recruit a designated driver before the game begins.

Host Responsibly with non-alcoholic drink options, and make sure each team member has a sober ride home.

Call in defense if you spot an impaired driver on the roadways. Ohio State Highway Patrol: 877-772-8765, Lorain County Sheriff’s Office: 440-323-1212

Score a touchdown by being a responsible host:

• Serve plenty of food and non-alcoholic beverages at the party. Check out the Zero-Proof Mix-Off recipes on LorainCountyHealth.com for non-alcoholic drink ideas.

• Host your party just like they do at the stadium. Stop serving alcohol at the end of the third quarter of the game. The fourth quarter is perfect for serving coffee and dessert.

• Keep the phone numbers of local cab companies on hand and take the keys away from anyone who is thinking of driving drunk. Remember, you can be held liable and prosecuted if someone you served ends up in a drunk-driving accident.
