WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - Indiana elementary and high school students can gain a global perspective on the dairy industry at the Indiana Dairy Youth Conference.

The annual conference, sponsored by Purdue Extension, will be held April 20 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Hendricks County Fairgrounds, 1900 E. Main St., Danville.

Students aged 8-18 can learn about good feeding, nutrition and milking practices for their dairy heifers, as well as investigate animal welfare and dairying practices in this country and around the world. Additionally, students will learn about judging dairy heifers and what judges consider in choosing winners.

"The Indiana Dairy Youth Conference is a great way to meet other youth from across Indiana who are interested in the dairy industry," said Kelly Heckaman, Purdue Extension educator in Kosciusko County. "One unique thing about this conference is the involvement of past and up-and-coming young leaders in the dairy industry taking a role in teaching the next generation of dairy enthusiasts. Attending is a great way to see what the dairy industry involves beyond Indiana and to help any 4-Her prepare for the upcoming show season."

Presenters at the conference include Purdue Extension educators from Starke, Pulaski, Kosciusko, Gibson and Ohio counties, as well as student representatives from the Indiana Dairy Youth Academy.

Students will have the chance to taste dairy products from other cultures, participate in discussions on animal welfare and communication at county fairs, and play games to learn more about the dairy industry.

Registration costs $15 per person, including adult attendees, and is due by April 11. Registration includes a T-shirt, admission, breaks and meals. Members of the Indiana Professional Dairy Producers may attend at no cost.
