Region unemployment up from month to month, still below last year’s rate

LIMA — All nine counties in the region saw unemployment rates lower in January than they were a year ago. However, all nine counties also saw jumps in the unemployment rate between December 2012 and January 2013, according to data released by the state Tuesday.



Allen County’s unemployment rate rose from 7 percent in December 2012 to 9.1 percent in January but fell from a year ago, when the rate was 9.5 percent.



Mercer County’s 5.3 percent unemployment rate was the lowest in the state in January. Mercer, Auglaize and Hancock counties also had rates at or below 7 percent in January.



Eight Ohio counties, none in the region, had unemployment rates above 13 percent in January. The average unemployment rate for Ohio in January was 8.4 percent.



While more people were unemployed in January than December, the number of jobs also grew in Ohio during that time, according to information from the Ohio Department of Job and Family Services.



The state’s unemployment rate for February will be released March 22. The rates for counties will be released March 26. For information on unemployment rates visit http://ohiolmi.com.
