Cooper Farms receives innovation award

Cooper Farms received Meatingplace magazineís industry leadership award, The Jewell, at the International Production and Processing Expo in Atlanta.

The Jewell award, named for poultry industry pioneer Jesse Jewell, was established to recognize a company that truly exhibits innovation in poultry processing.

Cooper Farms has embraced many new technologies. It most recent additions are located north of the companyís Cooked Meats location in Van Wert. The three wind turbines provide up to 75 percent of the plant's electricity. Cooper Farms became one of the first companies in the country to install Clean Room Slicing, a system which filters air to surgical standards within a slicing room to provide better quality and food safety.

Cooper Farms has also added high-pressure pasteurization. This is a process which applies an equal water pressure of 87,000 psi on packaged food products to destroy any possible pathogenic microorganisms. Cooper Farms designed a patent-pending method to transport the high pressure pasteurization vessels more efficiently.

Perry proTech receives award

Perry proTech, of Lima, has been honored with the 2013 Pro-Tech Service Award, from Konica Minolta Business Solutions. This award recognizes Konica Minolta dealerships that demonstrate the highest commitment to customer support and satisfaction.

This is the eighth year in a row that Perry proTech, headed by chief executive officer Barry Clark, has received this award. To attain the Pro-Tech standard, each element of Perry proTechís operation was evaluated and measured, including its management skills, inventory control systems, technical expertise, dispatch systems and customer satisfaction ratings.

School board members receive honors

Robert McPheron and Jackie Place, both board members of the Bath Local Schools, and Penny Kill, a board member of the Spencerville Local Schools, have been presented with the Ohio School Boards Associationís award of achievement. Place is also a board member with the Apollo Joint Vocational School District.

The award of achievement is given to school board members in recognition of their commitment to training and leadership activities on their boards of education and region and statewide Ohio School Board Association activities.

ONU student-run firm receive first prize

Ohio Northern Universityís student-run firm, True North Public Relations, took first place in a competition sponsored by the Ohio Department of Natural Resources (ODNR) to promote state parks in the Northern Ohio area. The competition called for teams to create promotional video and audio spots to be used regionally by the department.

Students who participated in the event were Lauren Tennet, of Houston, Texas, Katie Hozan, of Homerville, Candace Kaiser, of Bryan, Kathlyn Johnson, of Forest and Tyler Burnett, of Elida. Burnett handled the video editing, sound recording and editing duties.

Voice work for the audio and video spots were provided by Layne Schneider, of Dayton, Jim Scofield, of Sugar Land, Texas, Zane Sade, of Churubusco, Ind., Hayley Reynolds, of Sylvania and Sarah Nova, of Floyd Knobs, Ind.


Destiny Tours appoints tour operator

Cynthia Yahna, of Lima, has been appointed tour operator for Destiny Tours for the Lima and surrounding areas.

Yahna will organize and prepare day and overnight tours with a specialization in senior getaways.

Bath school board members named to state board

Bath local schools board of education member Timothy McKinney and Robert McPheron have both been named to the Ohio School Boards Association Board of Trustees.

The board of trustees is the main governing body of the association, composted of the eight-member executive committee, representatives from Ohioís six largest school districts and 18 representatives selected by the Ohio State Boards Association five regional associations.

McKinney has served on the local school board for five years, also serves on the Ohio School Boards Associationís Legislative Platform Committee and Capital Conference Planning Task Force. In addition, he is the Ohio School Board Association Northwest Region president-elect and serves on the regionís Executive Committee.

McPheron is president of the Bath Local Schools Board of Education, and is an 11-year school board veteran. He also serves on the Ohio School Boards Associationís Northwest Region Executive Committee.


Area residents graduate from Highway Patrol academy

Several area residents participated in and graduated from the 153rd Academy Class of the Ohio State Highway Patrol after 22 weeks of paramilitary training.

Alan Hankinson, of Lima, has been assigned to the Lima post. Logan Kirkendall, of Lima, has been assigned to the Toledo post. Korey Robinson, of Kenton, has been assigned to the Norwalk post. Jeremiah Smith, of Botkins, has been assigned to the Wapakoneta post.

In addition. Trooper Jeremiah Smith, of Botkins, took top performance in academics.

Each of the commissioned troopers will report to their posts. The graduatesí first 60 working days will be a field-training period under the guidance of a veteran officer.


UNOH business professionals head to state competition

The University of Northwester Ohio chapter of the Business Professionals of America will compete in the Ohio Business Professionals of America state competition held March 1 and 2 at Wright State University- Lake Campus, in Celina.

Students that place in the top three will have the opportunity to compete in the Business Professionals of America national competition in Orlando, Fla., to be held May 8-12.

The UNOH students competing are Nichole Barker, Ashley Bisel, Olivia Casey, Donald DíAddario, Heather Dulebohn, David Hites, MaryBeth Iliff, Casey Kreher, Nathan Maag, Saige Meyer, Dawn Murphy, Anthony Norton, Devan Reiff, Zachary Seagle, Tabitha Shonk and Cassio Sirimarco. Advisors are Dr. Robyn King and Professor Angela Bogart.
