Miller Family Homes receive award


Sue Dunlap of Miller Family Homes, Inc., of Lima, was presented the “Outstanding Builder of the Year” for 2013 from All American Homes in recognition of outstanding sales and service.


Miller Family Homes has been a dedicated independent builder for All American Homes of Indiana for 29 years. All American Homes is one of the top systems home manufacturers in the nation.


Stolly Insurance Agency earns honor


Stolly Insurance Agency, in Lima, has earned the distinction of “Presidential Agency Partner” from Western Reserve Group Insurance Company. Stolly Insurance Agency, Inc. has represented Western Reserve Group since April of 2003.


The “Presidential Agency Partner” is awarded to agencies which have achieved superior results with Western Reserve Group through sound business practices, professional advice and superior service.


Bluffton Company places third in competition


Bluffton Precast Concrete, of Bluffton, placed third in the annual Creative Use of Precast Awards competition. The award, sponsored by the National Precast Concrete Association, was presented to the company at The Precast Show 2014 in Houston.


Bluffton Precast Concrete developed the Eastern Hellbender Salamander Hut, a 150 pound precast concrete structure that can be installed in streams and riverbeds frequented by the Eastern Hellbender salamander. The ancient amphibian has declined as much as 82 percent in recent years.


David Akin, president of Bluffton Precast Concrete, partnered with biologist Greg Lipps on the project.


CERTIFICATIONS


Sdao completes re-certification


Steve Sdao, owner of Allpro Home Inspection Services, completed re-certification courses for the license required to inspect for wood-destroying insects. The State of Ohio requires this license when the inspection for wood destroying insects is involved with a real estate transaction.


ELECTIONS


Cooper to lead National Turkey Federation


Gary Cooper, chief operating officer of Cooper Farms, was elected as the chairman of the National Turkey Federation at the organization's annual convention in Orlando, Fla.


As chairman, Cooper will lead the National Turkey Federation executive committee in its mission to strengthen the turkey industry and raise awareness of turkey farming.


Cooper, as National Turkey Federation chairman, will have the honor of raising the turkeys which will be taken to the White House and pardoned by the president just days before Thanksgiving. Cooper's brother, Jim Cooper, participated in 1998.


APPOINTMENTS


Lucente appointed to board


Thomas J. Lucente Jr., of Lima, was appointed to the Allen County Law Library Resources Board by the Allen County commissioners.


NEW HIRES


Dr. Shankland joins Lima Dental Associates


Dr. Wesley Shankland, D.D.S., Ph.D. and director of the TMJ & Facial Pain Center, has joined Lima Dental Associates and Lima Oral Sleep Center at Lima Dental.


After serving as a medic in the army, Dr. Shankland returned to The Ohio State University to graduate from its college of dentistry in 1978. He served on the faculty of the College of Dentistry from 1979 until 1984, where he taught courses in clinical endodontics and temporomandibular disorders. He also holds a master's degree in anatomy from The Ohio State University and a doctorate, also in anatomy.


Dr. Shankland is a member of the editorial boards for 15 scientific journals and has authored more than 110 national and international scientific publications, a manual of head and neck anatomy and various chapters in 14 textbooks. He is a well-known international lecturer on headaches, temporomandibular disorders or facial pain and anatomy.


Shankland is a member of many professional organizations, including the American Academy of Craniofacial Pain, the American Academy of Sleep Medicine, the American Academy of Dental Sleep Medicine and the Academy of Clinical Sleep Disorders Disciplines. Dr. Shankland is board certified by the American Board of Craniofacial Pain.


Shankland is a 1971 graduate of Shawnee High School.


Area Agency on Aging 3 hires three


Area Agency Agency on Aging 3 has added three to its staff.


Mary Roof is a registered nurse with 20 years experience. She has worked with people with disabilities for 13 years. She has an associate's degree in nursing from Lima Technical College, a bachelor's in nursing from Indiana Wesleyan University and a master's in nursing education from Indiana Wesleyan University. She is a certified developmental disabilities nurse. She has published research on nurse's caring perception of people with intellectual/developmental disabilities. She also taught nursing in the RN, LPN and STNA programs at Rhodes State college. Roof has been hired as a care manager supervisor.


Gena West has been hired as a case manager. She has several years of experience in social services, including most recently with a position in discharge planning with St. Rita's Medical Center. She lives in Lima with her husband, Jack, who is also in social work.


Sharon Knopoka has been hired as a CRC specialist. She is a graduate from The Ohio State University in Columbus with a social service degree. She previously worked as the social service director at Lost Creek Care Center for 17 years.


Souza sworn in as humane agent


Carol Souza was sworn in as a humane agent recently. She is a humane agent with Top of Ohio Pet Shelter, in Logan County.


Souza is a 23-year veteran of the Air Force. She completed her humane agent training in London.


During her Air Force career, she was a military police office and a K-9 trainer/handler, so she has both law enforcement and animal handling in her background.


A humane agent enforces animal cruelty, animal neglect and other animal protection laws. Souza will be checking dog licensing issues as well as investigating neglect and cruelty cases.


EDUCATION


Hibner becomes registered architect


Matt Hibner has received his architectural registration for Ohio and is now a licensed architect. He has been with Garmann/Miller & Associates, Inc. in Minster since March of 2012.


Hibner received a bachelor's in architecture from Ball State University and master's of architecture from Miami University. He completed the intern development program under the supervision of licensed architects, logging more than 5,600 hours in training involving all aspects of architectural practice. The final step of the registration process was passing the seven division of the Architectural Registration Exam.


He is a member of the American Institute of Architects and became a LEED Accredited Professional through the US Green Building Council in 2006. He has also been approved for certification through the National Council of Architectural Registration Boards, allowing him to obtain reciprocal registrations in other states. He is registered in Indiana as well.


Hibner is a Coldwater native and now resides in Minster.


Carter attends seminar


Andy Carter, licensed massage therapist practicing at the Lima YMCA and private practice in Wapakoneta, has completed a seminar in releasing the rotator cuff in Indianapolis on Feb. 21. The treatment of rotator cuff injuries, how to release the affected muscles and prevention of future injuries were demonstrated and practiced. The seminar was led by Cross Country Education, providers of clinical skill-based continuing education for healthcare professionals.


OTHER RECOGNITION


ONU honors distinguished engineering alumni


Ohio Northern University's T.J. Smull College of Engineering, in Ada, honored Harold Marker and Jack Ridge with distinguished alumni awards.


Marker is a 1952 graduate from ONU with a civil engineering degree. He founded Thomas & Marker Construction Co., in Bellefontaine. With more than 100 associates, Thomas & Marker has earned a reputation for its ability to complete highly technical and complex projects. The company has constructed projects at ONU, including the Freed Center for the Performing Arts, James F. Dicke Hall and the King Horn Sports Center. Marker currently serves as chairman of the board, while three generations of the Marker family provide leadership for the business. Marker and his wife, Barbara, have been married for 62 years. They have three children, eight grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.


Ridge is a 1960 graduate of ONU with a degree in mechanical engineering. He began his career working in the aerospace and petroleum industries. He then opened his own engineering consulting firm in Findlay called Ridge & Associates. His interest in developing a job-costing program to improve his firm's operations led him to partner with two other individuals to launch a software development company. Solomon Software became one of the industry's market leaders in accounting software, serving more than 60,000 businesses worldwide. Solomon merged with Great Plains Software and was then acquired by Microsoft in 2001. Solomon's software development and technical support was outsourced by Microsoft to the newly created Plumbline Solutions in 2004. Ridge serves on Plumbline's board of directors. He also provides facilities consultation and oversees community outreach for Six Disciplines Corp. in Findlay. Ridge and his wife, Judy, have two children and seven grandchildren.
