Alleged dealer indicted in Celina drug death

CELINA — The man police say sold the drugs that killed a 36-year-old wife and mother has been charged in the case.

A Mercer County Grand Jury on Friday released 11 indictments against Phillip Roy Schmidt, 59, of Celina for his alleged role in the death of Michelle Riley. Schmidt reportedly sold drugs to Riley’s husband, Brett Riley, who then gave them to his wife. An overdose of the drug, a prescription pain patch called Fentanyl, is believed to have caused Michelle Riley’s death, according to Celina Police Chief David Slusser.

Charges include four counts of involuntary manslaughter, two counts of reckless homicide, three counts of corrupting another with drugs, two counts of trafficking in drugs and two counts of illegal possession of drugs. Schmidt was taken into custody on the indictments and is being held in the Mercer County Jail. He is expected to appear before Mercer County Common Pleas Court on Monday.

The Rileys were found unconscious on the floor of the family television room by their 11-year-old son on the night of June 9. Michelle was pronounced dead at the scene. Brett was taken to a hospital in Coldwater where he later regained consciousness. He has since been indicted on two counts of involuntary manslaughter and one count each of reckless homicide, corrupting another with drugs, trafficking and possession of drugs.
