LIMA — In an effort to make neighborhoods safer, Lima City Councilman Dr. Derry Glenn is funding neighborhood association membership dues for those interested in joining.
The $500 scholarship will fund 10 new members from each of the Southside, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., Riverside North and Schoonover Park neighborhood associations. The neighborhood association members are city residents who make an effort to bring awareness to issues in the city and collaborate to come up with solutions.
As a member one will learn what the city is involved in, what it takes to make a down payment on housing, how to get on PIP, what jobs are available and how to get involved in neighborhood clean-ups, according to Glenn.
Through the scholarship Glenn hopes to reach the 20-40 age demographic because he believes that they will help bring the community together.
“We have a lot going on and a lot of information to be given out,” he said. “A lot of neighborhoods are going down and they are losing a lot of members due to the age group.
In April, Glenn will be leading a workshop with the neighborhood association president and executive board to figure out the best plan for recruitment.
“We are trying to make them strong,” he said. “I came up through the neighborhood association and it helped me out so much. Lima was number one in the midwest for neighborhood association.”
