LIMA — At 1 a.m., shortly after cleaning up the house from a New Year’s Eve party, Cayla Moralez, 29, had gone to bed — only to notice her water had broken.
She immediately jumped up and told her boyfriend, Steven Whitaker, to wake up. At the time he was half asleep and didn’t know what to do, she said.
“He was like ‘Do I need to get dressed?’ and I was like,’ ‘Yeah we have to go’,” she said.
Whitaker was still in shock once she explained to him that her water broke. He figured it was a false alarm because Moralez thought her water had broken once before and it had not.
Despite the shock, the couple from Lima managed to get in the car and made it to St. Rita’s Mercy Health Hospital by 1:20 a.m., and by 1:30 a.m. Moralez went into labor. At 2:58 a.m. her five pound, one-ounce son, Elijah Whitaker, was born, her fifth child.
She was beyond happy to finally meet her son, an event that was so unexpected. Her son, who was due to make an appearance Jan. 8, is now here and bringing joy to the New Year.
“This is different,” she said. “But we’ve gotten a lot of attention, and it’s very exciting.”
