LIMA — A local nonprofit organization dedicated to providing residential lots to current and former military personnel is expanding its reach into Lima, and will hold a fundraiser to help more soldiers find housing.
Lots For Soldiers, which is based in Celina, recently moved into the Lima area after serving military servicemen and women in other areas in northwest Ohio.
“They’ve been operating in Celina for about six years, but they will go to any place where people want to move,” said Abby Goodlive, a sales manager at Lima’s Howard Johnson Inn who is helping organize a fundraiser for the nonprofit. “They’ve been working with the [Allen County] Land Bank to pick vacant lots they can build on.”
Lots For Soldiers donates residential lots to veterans and active duty military, and then it coordinates with the community to build a quality home at a reduced cost. Currently, there are more than 30 people on a waiting list to receive a lot. Goodlive said helping individuals get off the waiting list and into a home is one of the main reasons for the fundraiser.
“It’s going to help with the building materials for the lots they already have, as well as to purchase new lots so we can get more and more people off the waiting list and into housing,” she said. “We’re doing anything that we can to raise money so that these houses get built here in Lima.”
The fundraiser will be in the form of a benefit dinner, which will begin at 5 p.m. Sept. 29 at the Howard Johnson Inn, located at 1920 Roschman Ave. Along with a dinner and recognition ceremony (5 to 7 p.m.), the event will also include a cocktail hour (4 p.m.), silent auction (4 to 7 p.m.), cash bar and a DJ. All proceeds will be donated to Lots For Soldiers.
Presale tickets are $15 per person, and $30 at the door. For details or to purchase tickets, call Lots For Soldiers at 419-586-5058 or email firstname.lastname@example.org.
