VAN WERT — The 161st Van Wert County Fair starts Wednesday and runs through Sept. 4 at the fairgrounds, 1055 S. Washington St.

The community is heavily involved in the fair each and every year.

“Oh, I think that since this is the 161st Van Wert County Fair, obviously tradition is a big deal. And I think with us being a local, we’re a smaller fair, and we’re not too huge like the state fair, I think we have a lot of community involvement and community support, especially for the youth activities and 4H,” said Ty Coil, marketing manager for the Van Wert County Fairgrounds.

The fair has implemented a new admission policy, doing away with the old-fashioned hand stamping and card punching.

“We have a new admission policy, switching from hand stamping and card punching to daily bands. Since we’ve upped the admission by a $1, that is due to kids 12 and under being admitted free, our daily admission is $7. It is going to be a daily colored wristband worn on the wrist or the ankle, different colors will associate the different days,” Coil said.

Season bands and specialty bands will be sold, as usual, just offering a different colored wrist or ankle band.

“Our season ticket, which is a six-day band, is $20 for the length of the fair. They will get one band, a different style band, it looks different than the daily. It will say ‘season’ on that wrist or ankle band,” he said. “Our next option for admission is $28. This is called our membership band. Again, this is a six-day band, it will clearly state “membership” on there, but there are benefits with this one. You must be a Van Wert county resident to purchase a membership band. With this membership price you get free grandstand event access to all grandstand events this year.”

Another new pricing event is that grandstand ticket pricing is now consistent.

“I’m very excited about that. We had a lot of overall prices and it made it kind of un-affordable for people to attend, so implementing this new membership band and this new grandstand ticket pricing we are looking to see the events increase on this as well,” Coil said. “Our box seats are $3 each and general admission is $2 each. We do have pit passes available at the pit gate during the fair and those are going to be $15.”

Rides are an important draw at the fair.

“Our ride company is Kissell Brothers Shows, and they are bringing 18 to 20 rides on the grounds. We have used them for years,” Coil said. “Ride bands are $18 per day.”

While there is no concert this year at the Van Wert County Fair, there is plenty of musical entertainment in the music pavilion.

“We have a lot of good gospel bands lined up this year in the pavilion, like So’Journer; Randy Long from Van Wert; Soul’d Out Quartet; Samantha Rae Duquette, who won Ohio Has Talent a few years ago; Children Choosing Christ is coming back; Van Wert Area Community Band; Trinity; The Master’s Own; Tom Kennerk; Kaitlyn Schmit and the Move; The Talley’s,” Coil said.

In addition, there are 10 grandstand events scheduled.

“We have everything updated at the website vanwertcountyfair.com also on our Facebook page. We’ve got lots of good things happening,” Coil said.

The Van Wert County Fair kicks off Wednesday and runs through Sept. 4.
