In the book of Daniel 5, we see where Daniel was called upon to interpret the handwriting on the wall of King Belshazzar.
At the beginning of the passage, we learn the king made a great feast with 1,000 of his lords and drank wine in the vessels which his father, Nebuchadnezzar, had taken from the temple in Jerusalem. They brought golden vessels that had been taken from the house of God and drank wine from them, praising the gods of gold, silver, brass, iron, wood and stone.
In the very same hour, a hand appeared in the king's palace and wrote four words on the wall over a candlestick.
The handwriting is again upon the wall.
In verse 18, Scripture says this: oh thou king, the most high, God gave Nebuchadnezzar thy father a kingdom, and majesty, and the glory and honor. And for the majesty that he gave him, all people, nations and languages trembled and feared before him: whom he would he slew; and whom he would he kept alive; and whom he would he set up; and whom he would he put down. And when his heart was lifted up, and his mind hardened in pride, he was deposed from his kingly throne, and he took his glory from him.
Pride is not only the No. 1 problem in this nation but also in the church.
The handwriting in this passage of Daniel said this: Mene, Mene, Tekel, Upharsin. Daniel was brought to interpret this, and he found that Mene meant God hath numbered thy kingdom, and finished it; Tekel meant thou art weighed in the balances, and thou art wanting; and Peres meant thy kingdom is divided and given to the Medes and Persians. Daniel was clothed in royal clothes for what he did, but judgment had been released upon the king and his kingdom for his pride. Belshazzar was dead before that night was over.
Pride comes in many forms. Many are prideful and do not have a clue that they are prideful. When you have a problem admitting that you are wrong, that is pride. When you have a problem admitting that you do not understand something, that is pride. When you refuse to change when you know that you are wrong, that is pride. When you are embarrassed, that is pride because your concern is about what people think. When you cannot admit that you do not know something, that is pride. When you want to be in control of everything, that is pride. When you feel that no one can do things as well as you, that is pride. Critical people, who think they can always do things better than someone else, that is pride.
The word of God says that pride comes before a fall. The Amorites, as you know, are enemies of Israel, the Church. Amorite means pride and brings with it, jealousy, control, boastfulness, sarcasm and scoffing. The Amorite spirit is one of the works of the flesh. This is one thing that must be destroyed if you ever think that you are going to possess your promised land. God will never allow us to receive something so grand from Him that Satan will be able to take away in an instant.
Proverbs 11:1: A false balance is an abomination before the Lord. Therefore, anything that is in excess or lack is an abomination before the Lord. We are to come into balance with the Lord and the things of the Lord. We should live a balanced life before the Lord. Therefore, all the doors being closed to the enemy and restricting all access to ourselves is our goal. One of the cities in the Gaza strip which Israel had to conquer before entering the promised land was Ashdod, which also means fruitfulness of the flesh. Leviathan also represents pride.
While the church has been distracted with many asleep in the faith, Leviathan has set up his kingdom in the church. It is time to evict him for the glory of the Lord.
