LIMA — Shawnee Alliance Church will be holding a Women’s Wellness Day May 4. The event will feature a variety of vendors that focus on women’s health and wellness involving mind, body and spirit.

“As of now, we have 25 booths and vendors for women to visit,” said Sandy Rufener, director of women’s ministries at the church. “Our goal is to have 40.”

Some of the vendors will offer health screenings for things like high blood pressure, melanoma and osteoporosis. Other offerings will include massage therapists offering their services for $1 per minute, and a chef will demonstrate healthy cooking ideas.

Throughout the event, healthy snacks will be provided, and attendees will also be able to purchase a lunch.

“We’re trying to get lots and lots of things,” said Rufener. “The point of this is taking care of the whole person — mental, emotional, spiritual and physical.”

The event will also feature speaker Lisa Meiners, a Lima native who now resides in Centerville.

“We had Lisa speak at a Christmas event,” said Rufener, “and she was just an outstanding speaker.”

Meiners’ original goal was to be an elementary teacher, and after getting her education degree, she started on that path. However, God had other plans for her.

After her children were born, Meiners stayed home with them. She started to substitute teach as they got older, with the goal of having her own classroom. At the same time, she was also teaching Bible studies at Fairhaven Church where her family has attended for over a decade.

“When you have the gift of teaching,” she said, “there are many different ways you can use that.”

Some of the women in her life began to affirm that Meiners had a special speaking gift. Together, they paid for her to attend training at Billy Graham’s Training Center at The Cove where Meiners was able to sit under Anne Graham Lotz’s teaching. In addition, she attended both Christian comedian Ken Davis’ Dynamic Communicators Workshop and She Speaks, a premiere conference for aspiring speakers and writers organized by well-known Christian speaker and author, Lysa Terkeurst.

In 2004, Meiners was asked to speak at her first conference. “A lady came up to me after a Bible study where I was facilitating a Beth Moore study, and she asked me to speak at her church’s event,” she explained. “I had never done that before, but her woman’s group took a chance on me. That was in 2004. I never dreamt that God’s Word would be my curriculum.”

God has continued to grow Meiners’ ministry. She speaks about six times a year, and she has also written a Bible study, “Unfolding the Truth: One Book at a Time” on book of Galatians.

“My husband told me I needed to write a book,” she said. “I didn’t want to write another book because we don’t read ‘the Book.’ I did end up writing a study on Galatians, but it is more of a guide to help the reader discover the truths of Galatians on their own, not blurred by my thoughts.”

She plans to write another study on I and II Thessalonians this summer. “In this season with my children,” she explained, “summer is when I have days free.”

As her ministry has grown Meiners continues to substitute teach. It took her a while to relinquish her dream of a classroom of her own, but she feels she is now ready to take the next step.

“God hasn’t released me yet from my substitute teaching, but I am ready for that,” she said. “It was a big deal for me — letting go of that dream of being a classroom teacher. I always wrestle with God, and I lose every time.”

Meiners’ main goal in her ministry is to encourage women to a deeper walk with God which is where the name of her ministry, Deeper Still, came from.

As she prepares for various speaking engagements, she said her greatest challenge is the brokenness of women.

“The things of this world, the brokenness we have, that’s incredible to me,” Meiners said. “I want to be relevant — what would I need to hear if I was in the audience? I long for God’s Word and the message He speaks through me to change their tomorrows. That’s a tall order, but I serve a big God.”

Meiners plans to speak at the Women’s Wellness Day about the Biblical character Daniel and to offer practical tools for women to find whole health in their own lives.

When women leave the Women’s Wellness Day, Meiners hopes they take a message of hope with them. “I want them to walk out with three practical tools to experience whole health,” she said. “I want them to start growing, becoming healthier in mental, physical, emotional and spiritual health.”
