LAFAYETTE — Hannah Dienhart says she’s baked exactly two pies in her life. The first was at school, Apollo Career Center. She just started there this year, her junior year. She’s in the culinary arts program.

Her second pie was a prize-winner. She won second place with an apple pie at the recent Allen County Apple Festival.

“I didn’t expect I was going to win anything,” Dienhart said, laughing. “But it was pretty awesome.”

Not too shabby for a pie that almost didn’t get to the contest on time. The Dienhart family was pushing for time that day, she remembers, and it was a bit of a race to get it baked and submitted.

She and her mother, Miriam, went through all the apple pie recipes they had and decided on a double crust version. Dienhart took the trouble of adding a few extra leaves made out of dough on top. She learned about the contest at school and thought it sounded like fun.

“I love cooking. Always have. I think I get it from her,” Dienhart said, nodding to her mother in the family kitchen. “I love to bake.”

At school, Dienhart enjoys working in the Garden Cafe. She’s on hostess duty right now, but she’s looking forward to getting back in the kitchen to help with food prep. Visit the cafe from 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays at Apollo Career Center.
