VAN WERT — Tiffany Spray has been selling cakes out of her home for about four years now. Stacia Grose is a nurse who also has a baking habit.

But now, the women are the creative force behind Cake Crazy, a business projected to open at the end of March in downtown Van Wert.

The business is an effort that also involves Grose’s husband, Brad, and her brother-in-law Shaun Putman and his wife, Shawna. The business will be in the former Bon Ton shoe repair shop on North Washington Street, which they will gut and completely remodel.

The women first met in November and hit it off immediately.

“Everything just clicked into place,” Grose said. “I’m quitting my job to do this.”

“We all mesh in our ideas and our thinking and our personalities,” Spray said.

The women are busy working out the details now. They know they will have a display counter with jumbo cupcakes ready for walk-in sales, and they’re organizing their 40-plus flavors they have in their arsenal. (A few: Blueberry Pancake, Peppermint Mocha, Chocolate Salted Caramel.) The shop will also have a seating area and a space for wedding cake consulting.

One thing they know they are not is a bakery.

“We will not be a bakery. We are a cakery,” Spray said, explaining their baked goods will be limited to cakes and cupcakes.

Spray began this quest one day when she decided to figure out how to make a larger, stacked cake. She had grown up baking with her mom and grandmother, but she was inspired by “Cake Boss” and the like.

“I was hooked,” Spray said. “I’m obsessed with design and detail. It just went from there. … Obviously, it’s got to taste good, but it’s got to have that ‘wow’ factor. The more challenging, the better.”

Grose also feels drawn to baking.

“It’s just like a form of art for me. It’s relaxing,” Grose said. “You can do so many different things, it’s endless.”

Find Cake Crazy on Facebook or call 419-203-6365 until the shop is open.
