LIMA — By day, Sara Anderson is a high school math teacher at Lima Senior. But when she’s done with school, she retreats to her kitchen, where even the hand soap at her sink — iced gingerbread — reflects her interests.
Anderson enjoys school, especially in those moments were she sees a young person understand a concept for the first time, but she really enjoys baking. She’s rather unabashed in that love, in fact.
“You always make people happy when you give them cupcakes. You don’t always make people happy when you give them algebra problems,” Anderson said, laughing.
She would love nothing more than to open a bakery. But for now, she operates Sara’s Sweets out of her home. (Call 419-371-4745 or find it on Facebook for details.) Aside from custom orders, you may also nosh on Anderson’s cupcakes at The Met. The wine bar downtown offers mini cupcake flights, and this month’s flavors are banana pudding, coconut snowball and toffee crunch. She also blogs for Rays Supermarkets.
Anderson has many good memories of baking with her mother in her hometown of Peoria, Ill. She also worked in a bakery during her younger years. She and her husband, Ben, moved here from Peoria about three years ago.
“I kind of got on a cupcake kick in college,” she said. “Basically, taking anything and turning it into a cupcake is one of my favorite things to do.”
She’s made key lime pie cupcakes to a baked version of her favorite candybar, Take 5, which included pretzels, caramel and peanuts. She also bakes cookies and small cakes.
While Anderson enjoys cooking, she is more of a baker.
“Baking is more precise. Since I’m a numbers-type person, I love that. You have to follow the recipe. You have to measure things exactly how they say. Baking is a science,” she said. “I like sweets a lot, so that’s one of the reasons, too.”
