LIMA — A breath of summertime ease washes through the Ellen Nelson Gallery when ArtSpace/Lima opens “A Fine Craft Invitational” on Saturday.

“This is a wonderful exhibit. We have 20 invited craftpersons, each exhibiting three to five of their pieces. We’re building on the success of last year’s show, both in terms of critical review and financial success,” said Bill Sullivan, operations manager at ArtSpace.

Yet because of the mediums used, Sullivan believes this exhibit to be a bit lighter than some of the normal ArtSpace fare.

“I was watching CBS Sunday Morning some time ago and saw a piece about the Boston Symphony taking off their tuxedos in the summer and offering a less-formal program. Other symphonies began picking up on this trend, and I thought maybe we could do the same,” Sullivan said.

Thankfully, it was able to be done without sacrificing quality.

“The difference between craft and art is really hard to tell. I’ve asked a variety of people for a definition between the two, and haven’t found anything that satisfies me,” Sullivan said.

The majority of these pieces are for sale, with prices ranging from $75 to $11,000.

“These are A-list artists, and the work they’re bringing is top-notch,” Sullivan said.

The mediums in this show include wood, metal, clay, paper, fabric and various jewelry-oriented cmobinations of metals and beads. Artists, many of whom have taken home honors from past ArtSpace shows, include Kay Boiarski, Jaye Bumbaugh, Bruce Chesser, Ed Corle, Judy Decker, Jack Earl, Anna Fisher, Mary Gaynier, LaVerne Kemp, Mike Kozumplik, Kim Leopold, Robert Minto, Libbi Pennington, Yasue Sakaota, Luke Sheets, Steve Smith, Kaname Takada, Sumiko Takada, Les Thede and Marvin Thorp.
