VAN WERT — A healthy dose of all things autumn is available this weekend in Van Wert, where the 25th annual Apple Festival kicks into high gear.“We have four local orchards providing fall apples for this,” said Greg Ilderton, one of those orchard owners, and vice president of the Van Wert Fruit Growers. “This is the time of year we have the golden delicious, Rome Beauty, Jonathan and Granny Smith apples in season,” Ilderton said. And those apples will be available in every form from apple butter to apple cider to fresh off the tree. But it's not just apples on display at this festival.“We have wagon rides, pony rides, games. There is cornhole, candle making, caramel corn making, art displays, pumpkin and sunflower contests, and ham and bean soup making. It's a full slate of activities,” Ilderton said. And, knowing how tricky fall weather can be, some of the activities are indoors.“We try and keep some of the stuff, including the food and entertainment and crafts, indoors. Of course, we have a lot of fun things going on outdoors, too,” Ilderton said.“This is a fun event for the fall season. It allows the local orchards to promote their activities, and gives people a good time at the same time,” he said.
