Coats of many colors and big silhouettes made fall’s cover story. Pastel and brightly hued oversize overcoats won ovations at Raf Simons’ last collection for Jil Sander (he’s now at Christian Dior). Diane von Furstenberg, Celine, Chloe and Comme des Garcons also sent spacious outerwear down their runways. Several designers opted for opulence with fur, faux fur and leather. Military styles at Altuzarra and Tommy Hilfiger stood up and got noticed. Behemoth down coats have been pared down to figure-flattering proportions. Looking to replace your much-loved but worn wrap? Here are some choices.

• Add Narciso Rodriguez to the list of designers participating in the high-low fashion sweepstakes. In the first installment of Kohl’s new DesigNation program, Rodriguez traveled to Istanbul to find inspiration for a collection that includes outerwear, tops, dresses and knits, retailing from $30 to $150. This black glittery textured tweed coat, paired here with charcoal leggings, evokes the designer’s streamlined aesthetic. $150, available at Kohl’s stores and at www.kohls.com.

• Keeping your neck covered is key to feeling warm. Topshop’s knee-length check funnel neck coat with contrasting charcoal trim will make you long for cold weather so you can button up. The generous cut means there’s room for layers underneath. Wear with skinny pants and brogues for a country chic vibe on weekends. Any time, this topper adds polish. $196 at www.topshop.com.

• For those who can’t abide weighty winter coats, L.L. Bean’s feather-light, toasty warm and water-resistant down jacket may fit right into your wardrobe. It falls at the hip and can stow into its own pocket for travel. Dry-cleaning phobes, note that you can machine wash and dry it. $179, at L.L. Bean stores and www.llbean.com.

• Dial down the crispness of this double-breasted buttoned cape by pairing it with elbow-length gloves; for dressy occasions, try black suede, velvet or sequin. A front zipper and pockets increase its functionality. Maisie cape, $198, at Anthropologie stores and www.anthropologie.com.
