By David AdamsThe story‚??What is wrong with you?‚?Ě says Adm. Shane (Liam Neeson) to Lt. Alex Hopper (Taylor Kitsch). ‚??You have skills, but I have never seen anyone waste them like you do.‚?Ě Alex's problem is arrested development, so he's always in trouble with his superiors, much to older brother Stone's (Alexander Skarsgaard) dismay. To complicate matters, Alex falls in love with Adm. Shane's daughter Samantha (Brooklyn Decker) and, wouldn't you know, nasty extra-terrestrials splash down in the Pacific. That's the setup. Will Alex muster courage to ask Adm. Shane's permission to marry Sam? Will Alex's screw-ups ruin his brother's naval career? And what about those aliens? Will they conquer Earth? What do you think? The actorsThe makers of ‚??Battleship‚?Ě are not much interested in its human story ‚?? will trouble-maker Alex ever grow up? ‚?? so cast members don't have much to do. Saying lines seems to be enough, at least for Taylor Kitsch and Brooklyn Decker as Alex and Sam who have no back stories or detectable chemistry between them. They do ‚??meet cute,‚?Ě as if this were a rom-com, but the sequence is embarrassingly lame and unfunny. Liam Neeson as no-nonsense Adm. Shane and Alexander Skarsgaard as older brother Cmdr. Hopper invest a bit more in their performances but they are hardly on screen. Tadanobu Asano is Japanese naval Capt. Yugi Nagata. His and Alex's changing relationship is more interesting than Alex and Sam's alleged romance.Others in the cast include World War II, Korean and Iraqi veterans, notably Gregory D. Gadson as Lt. Col. Mike Canales and a half dozen older vets in the film's last act. Rihanna plays plucky Petty Officer Cora Raikes. Hamish Linklater is nerdy Cal Zapata. Other comments‚??Battleship‚?Ě is a big, dumb, special-effects flick with sci-fi frame attached. Peter Berg directed. Erich Hoeber and Jon Hoeber wrote the witless script. Like ‚??Battle Los Angeles‚?Ě (2011), it's a war movie pretending to be sci-fi. Alien hardware comes from Planet Transformer (or Planet Hasbro) ‚?? it's big, lethal and noisy. Aliens, when we glimpse them, have amphibian eyes and quill-like goatees, but lack any motivation for attacking us. What do they want? ‚??Everything,‚?Ě says a soft-drink ad that precedes the movie. ‚??Battleship‚?Ě includes subtitled shots of U.S. ships and young men and women with ‚??NAVY‚?Ě on the back of their shirts, so this may be a recruitment film.Rated PG-13 for intense violence, action, destruction and language, it runs a long 130 minutes. Filmgoers will recognize bits from ‚??2001,‚?Ě ‚??Alien,‚?Ě ‚??Titanic,‚?Ě ‚??Predator,‚?Ě Matrix,‚?Ě and ‚??Iron Man.‚?Ě Watch ‚??District 9‚?Ě instead. Final words‚??Battleship's‚?Ě a dud,Dumb on land and sea,Mindless, noisy, long,At least it's not 3-D.
