The story

Ewan McGregor is a no-name, no-family, no-history ghostwriter who??s hired to rewrite former UK Prime Minister Adam Lang??s (Pierce Brosnan) memoir. ??You name it, he ghosts it,? says McGregor??s agent. The pay? $250,000 ?? not bad for a month??s work. Of the manuscript, McGregor says, ??All the words are there, just in the wrong order.? He??s replacing another ghostwriter who died mysteriously. ??The book killed him,? someone says. The book may kill McGregor, too, as the plot turns and twists. Characters who know more than they??re telling include Amelia Bly (Kim Cattrall), Lang??s assistant and (probably) lover, and Ruth Lang (Olivia Williams), Lang??s wife who (maybe) fancies McGregor. Complicating the plot is Tom Wilkinson as retired Harvard professor Paul Emmett. He also knows more than he??s telling.

Will the International War Crimes Court charge Lang with crimes against humanity? What is the Arcadian Society? Can McGregor unravel the ever-widening mystery? See this political mystery thriller to find out.

The actors

An accomplished cast gives excellent performances. Ewan McGregor is quick and smart as the cynical, suspicious, lone wolf ghostwriter. He??s a man of few words. ??Who are you?? says Lang when they meet. ??I??m your ghost,? says McGregor. Pierce Brosnan is evasive as former Prime Minister Adam Lang. He??s not telling everything either, especially about his undergraduate theater work at Cambridge. Tom Wilkinson is excellent as Harvard prof Paul Emmett who??s forgotten he knew Lang at university. Kim Cattrall and Olivia Williams are Amelia Bly and Ruth Lang, the ambiguous women in Lang??s life.

Others in the cast included Eli Wallach in an arresting cameo, James Belushi as John Maddox and Soogi Kang and Lee Hong Thay as Dep and Duc, vaguely threatening cook and chauffeur for the Lang household.

Other comments

??Ghost Writer? is a nifty political mystery thriller, engrossing and nicely atmospheric. Roman Polanski directed and co-wrote the script with Robert Harris from his novel. Filmed in the UK and France, it??s set (mostly) in Martha??s Vineyard. Among its pleasures are performances that suggest more than they reveal, a tight, terse script and a plot that kept its secrets until the end. What isn??t a secret is that the film models Adam Lang on former UK Prime Minister Tony Blair. You can fill in the film??s other real life sources.

Rated PG-13 for language and sex, it??s adult entertainment, as good a thriller as I??ve seen in a while. Runs 128 minutes. See this one before it gets away.

Final words

Good mystery thriller,

Politico confessing,

??Ghost Writer??s? plot

Will keep you guessing.
