LIMA — It’s the end of summer, and time to bring out the big dogs, literally.

And this weekend, Max McCluer is planning to do just that, and put them through their paces during his second year of Water Dog Races/Swap Meet/Flea Market at the Allen County Fair.

“Last year it blew me away,” McCluer of his first year event at the Allen County Fair. “This year, it should be almost one-third bigger. I’m battin’ at 1,200 vendors now,” McCluer said. Last year, there were 800 vendors on hand for the first-time event.

“The fairground is a tremendous facility, and we should fill it pretty good,” he added.

Along with the vendors, there will be water dog races, dog treeing contests, horseshoe pitching and cornhole contests.

“About the only thing different this year from last is that we’re going to race the dogs at night rather than during the day,” McCluer said.

It was the close of the Kenton Coon Dog Trials that sparked the idea for the local event.

“This has been a tradition to the east of here for years and years. They had a good thing going, and the people loved that tradition. I have people coming here from 20 states to be part of this,” McCluer said.

And he guarantees they will go away pleased with everything at this year’s show. “It’s just going to be a good time. The last hurrah of summer,” McCluer said.
