LIMA — Endurance athlete and nutritionist Lisa Dorfman told St. Charles Catholic School students Friday that speaking before them was one of the biggest thing she’s ever done.
That was quite a statement by Dorfman, an Ironman triathlete, marathon runner and world-known nutritionist who has counseled hundreds of athletes including Olympians and pros.
Dorfman told students before the Positive Addiction Run on Friday she has three positive addictions in her life.
“I’m addicted to good eating. Good eating is what fuels me. I am addicted to clean living. I exercise, I go to church. I feel good,” she said. “I’m addicted to serving the Lord and that is probably the most important thing I do.”
Dorfman said she felt honored coming to Lima especially since it’s now famous for the TV show “Glee.”
She spoke of the challenges she experienced as a child, including trying to fit in. She also spoke of other challenges including when a drunken driver hit her head on and nearly ended her athletic career when she was 18.
“Everything I thought I’d be doing in my life, in an instant, just completely changed,” she said.
With her jaw wired shut, struggling to eat and healing from the accident, Dorfman said, the crash inspired her to become a nutritionist. Along the way she regained her athletic career, she said.
“I became one of the fastest runners in the country. I got paid to run. That is really cool,” she said.
Dorfman told the students nutrition is important and gave them ideas for a healthy diet:
1. Get color in your diet and that does not included colored candy, rather vegetables and other colorful healthy foods.
2. Cut back on sugar.
3. Avoid foods that are covered by sauces, breading or gravy.
