LIMA — McDonald’s Youth Theatre is presenting “The Rehearsal” at Encore Theatre.
“The Rehearsal” is a comedy about a teacher who is trying to produce the musical “Guys and Dolls,” much to the chagrin of the kids. There aren’t enough guys for the “guys” parts and there is a girl who is clinically incapable of following directions, and she has a doctor’s note to prove it.
Ashley Shank is directing “The Rehearsal.” She’s directed shows in the past, noting that in 2016 she directed “10 Ways to Survive the Zombie Apocalypse,” which was written by the same author as “The Rehearsal.”
”It’s a little different from his first work, or maybe it’s just because I’ve seen more since then, but this one gives me more freedom to do stuff. Definitely a lot of chances for the kids to have input, too. They’ve definitely been asking a lot of like ‘Hey, can we try this’, and I say let’s ride it out and see how it works,” said Shank.
There are about 20 kids in the cast and two kids helping out with the crew. Most of the kids have been in plays before.
“Sometimes I have to say, okay you are doing too well of a job, you need to do worse. Everyone just laughs at that,” said Shank.
