Highlights: If you ask for one scoop of ice cream at The Creamery, you might be in for a surprise, but in a good way. These guys don’t mess around when it comes to offering generous portions of frozen dairy treats. The local favorite offers 32 flavors of hard-dipped ice cream, and an extensive line of sundaes, malts and shakes. In addition to cold dairy treats, it also serves shredded chicken sandwiches, coney dogs, barbecue beef, nachos with meat and more. Open since 1982, The Creamery is currently owned by Dan Warnement.

3. Pete’s Ice Cream, Lima

Location: 3270 S. Dixie Highway, Lima

Hours: 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. Monday to Saturday, 1 p.m. to 10 p.m. Sunday (March through September)

Highlights: Dave and Donna Peters opened their ice cream stand in 2009. Now, they offer 40 flavor of hard-dipped ice cream, as well as four flavors of soft-serve ice cream: Chocolate, vanilla, blackberry and orange. (And if you participate in their loyalty program, you can get your seventh ice cream free.) Other popular items include 36 flavors of milkshakes, Avalanches and banana splits. Sandwiches and other snack items are also available, if you need something to balance out the sweetness. Don’t miss happy hour from 1 p.m. to 6 p.m. Monday to Friday, during which small cones are offered at a reduced price. And be sure to bring the kids’ grade cards in at the beginning of June for a free baby size soft-serve cone for earning an A.

3. Dairy Hut, Delphos

Location: 910 E. 5th St., Delphos

Hours: 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. daily in summer, 11 a.m to 9 p.m. when school starts through the end of September

Highlights: Currently owned by Brian Altenburger, Dairy Hut offers way more than the standard chocolate and vanilla ice cream. In fact, this ice cream business has an arsenal of 24 flavors of soft serve, as well as Hershey’s premium ice cream. It also makes its own orange sherbet and offers a lineup of sundaes, flurries, slushies and more. If you’re in the mood for something a little more savory, consider grabbing a homemade shredded chicken sandwich, a hot dog or a coney dog.
