WESTERVILLE —The sixth generation Ford Thuderbird debuted in the fall of 1971 as a 1972 model. It was the largest Thunderbird ever produced by Ford, sharing the body and frame with the Lincoln Mark IV. These “Bigger Birds” were popular the first two years, but the 1973 oil crisis halted the record sales. But, when it came to luxury, the 1974 Thunderbird was a classic. The cabin was roomy, classy with wood-veneer accents and plenty of chrome. There were 58,443 units sold during this model year.

Robert Bucher, of Westerville, brought his 1974 Ford Thunderbird to The Lima News’ Real Wheels Cruise-In. His is a white and gold luxury group special edition. He bought the car in the spring of 2011. The car was originally ordered by the owner of a southeastern Ohio Ford dealership for his personal use. He owned it for 30 years. The original sticker price was $8,745. Bucher appreciates the smooth, quiet ride. The 460, V-8 was built in Lima. Bucher says it runs like new, without a trace of vibration, and he says it’s quite a tribute to the quality of Lima’s Ford Engine Plant.
