LIMA — Andy Maravola and John Waller have been friends for a number of years, sharing an interest in cars. Waller owns a 1963 Chevy Nova while Maravola owns a 1991 Chevy Camaro. These friends put their minds together and along with Andy Johnson, of Westgate, have been successful at putting on the Charity Car Show.

The fifth annual Charity Car Show will be held from noon to 5 p.m., June 30, at Westgate Entertainment Center parking lot. The show is open to all vehicles or motorcycles, with an entry fee of $10.

Proceeds from this year’s Charity Car Show will be directed to the DARE Program and Andy Johnson’s Children’s Christmas.

“We have given over $10,000 in five years from these car shows,” said Andy Maravola. “All of the money is kept local,” he said.

Recipients of the charity car shows have included, Andy Johnson’s Children’s Christmas, local veterans, equestrian therapy, Angels for Animals, Lima Senior band and Simon Youth Foundation.

“We decided to have a car show with the first one benefiting Lima Senior. We have been having it every year and it has grown every year. Last year we had 225 cars at our show,” Andy said. “What I am most proud of is I have people coming up to me telling me they know where the money goes,” he added.

Awards will include the top 40 cars, $500 best of show, top bike award, open class bike award, Andy’s choice and John’s choice. There will also be an award for the best street ready car.

“We have awards for the top 40 cars this year. The more cars we get, we up the awards and more people have a chance to win,” he added.

Maravola and Waller work months in advance for this annual car show so they have something for everyone.

This year the event will include a craft show, DJ Old Skool providing music, an F-16 Fighter plane, possibly an M2 Abrams tank, a raffle with items such as a custom bar stool, AAA membership, Westwood Fitness Club membership, Biggby Coffee prizes and an outdoor speaker system.

Maravola was excited about the F-16 Fighter plane from the Air Force for the first time. Barring any government problems, the plane will arrive June 29th to be set up in the old Friendly’s lot for the June 30th event.

“I want to personally thank all my sponsors and businesses who donate for the raffle for their help, including Time Warner, WLIO and The Lima News,” Maravola said. “Without them doing what they do for us, we would never be able to do what we want to do,” Maravola added.
