Trio continues series’ global theme

BLUFFTON - A trio comprised of a violin, a viola and a cello will continue the global music theme of the Bluffton University Artists' Series 7:30 p.m. Thursday in the university's Yoder Recital Hall.
According to Robin Bowlus of the university's public relations office, the diverse cultural backgrounds of the Adaskin String Trio will "make this performance unique." The performance includes guest solo oboist Thomas Gallant, an award-winning musician and one of the world's few virtuoso solo and chamber music performers on the oboe.
"All of the artists series performances this year have a theme of global music. This performance will continue that," Bowlus said. "(Gallant) is known for his performance style that combines American and European traditions of oboe playing."
The Adaskin String Trio was formed in 1994 and includes violinist Emlyn Ngai, violist Steve Larson and cellist Mark Fraser. It has appeared in New York City, Boston, Washington, D.C., Los Angeles, Pittsburg and Montreal and has been broadcast on CBC Radio, Radio-Canada and National Public Radio.
For Thursday's concert, the trio will perform pieces by Mozart, Beethoven, Josef Haydn, Ernst von Dohnanyi, Miklos Rosza and Heitor Villa-Lobos.
