LIMA - Why stop at just one gifted artist when you can have two?
ArtSpace/Lima's most recent exhibit doubles up on talent with "From St. Petersburg, With Love," which runs through Sept. 6 at the downtown gallery. The show features nearly 100 images from local photographer Dick Minck, who lives part of the year in Lima and part in St. Petersburg, Fla., and multiple large and small ceramic works by nationally recognized St. Petersburg artist Brian Ransom.
Combining the two artists into one show adds extra excitement to the exhibit, said ArtSpace/Lima manager of operations Bill Sullivan. Ransom's three-dimensional pieces complement Minck's images, adding even more depth to the display.
"It gives the exhibit some dimension," he said. "Instead of just having a lot of flat things on the walls, we have things on pedestals in the gallery. It makes for an even more interesting exhibit."
According to Minck, his photos encompass a wide variety of subjects and themes. Minck has been recognized twice in The Lima News Photography Contest in 2004 and 2006. His work has also been published in various Florida publications.
"It's so diverse it's hard to believe," he said in a telephone interview. "I always have at least one camera in the car. It's a never-ending venture to look for subject matter."
Ransom, a professor at Eckert College in St. Petersburg, is known nationally for his playable ceramic instruments. Minck said the exhibit will also feature video of Ransom playing the instruments, adding ambiance to the galleries. The combination of photography, ceramics and music will be especially effective.
"They work beautifully together," Minck said of the exhibits. "I think it will make a tremendous impact, no question."
