HARROD — “A device for shrinking time and distance. Pontiac GTO.” These were the words on the front of the 1965 Pontiac GTO sales brochure. Inside the brochure, the marketing executives chose to almost “dare” the consumer to drive the GTO. They warn of the power behind the GTO, the dismal gas mileage and the dualing dual exhausts. The brochure screams REBEL Car. The brochure goes so far as to tell the consumer, maybe one of the other Pontiac cars would be best for them. Sales of the GTO, helped quite a bit from songs and various merchandise, more than doubled to 75,342 during the 1965 model year. It spawned many imitators, both within other GM divisions and its competitors.
Rick Stoermer, of Harrod, brought his 1965 Pontiac GTO to The Lima News’ Real Wheels Cruise-In. He and his wife met through his first 1965 Pontiac GTO, when they were in college. His GTO brought him many grand things in his life, his wife, their children and now grandchildren. Chances are Stoermer will cherish his GTO forever, just like he cherishes his family.
