LIMA — Stewardship of the land has grown in popularity in the last decade, but Earth Day is still important to keep people aware that this is a world worth saving.

“I’ve been doing this for 13 years, and Earth Day has become a more common concept in that time. Today, things like recycling are becoming more standard for people to do, which is a good thing. But it’s important that we continue to support people in their efforts and let them know that those efforts are appreciated,” said Rae Neal, long-time organizer of the local Earth Day celebration.

This year’s event will be held Saturday at the pavilion in Faurot Park.

This year, along with the information booths and activities, there will be demonstrations on healthy food.

“We are going to get to watch, and sample, some of the healthier choices for food. And I think we’ll even have some ice cream samples there,” Neal said.

There will also be information on local efforts to improve quality of life throughout the Lima area. There will be a demonstration on getting healthy with a zumba class. And there will be musical entertainment throughout.

Among the entertainers will be folksinger Gusti from the Cleveland area. Locally, performers include the Bath Show Choir and Barbershop Quartet, the Lima schools choirs, the Blues Society Youth Band, the Mad River Dulcimer Society and Purple Overcoat.

“You know, this is a good day for people to get outside and enjoy the great outdoors. Also, people tend to learn something of their own community through this on-going project, and that’s always good,” Neal said.
