It’s beginning to look a lot like Christmas. If you have yet to find your holiday cheer, there are plenty of festive opportunities going on this week to put you in a jolly old mood.

The annual Christmas Tree Festival continues through Sunday, while many light displays in the area will go on throughout December. There are also musical events, plays, and open houses to ease you into the season. Just check out the listing and stop in for your favorites.


40th Annual Christmas Tree Festival

Allen County Museum

620 W. Market St.

Extended hours today allow you more time to check out the more than 85 decorated trees, entertainment, and exhibits in this annual event. Hours are 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. today, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday and 1 to 5 p.m. on Sunday. Free, but donations accepted.

“Best Christmas Pageant Ever”

Encore Theatre

A pack of unruly children turns a church’s Christmas pageant into something few viewers will ever forget. The show runs at 8 p.m. today and Saturday, as well as 2 p.m. on Sunday. Tickets are $14 adults, $9 youth at 419-223-8866.

The Swiss Community Historical Society will host “An Old-Time Christmas at the Homestead” from 1 to 6 p.m. Saturday. There will be 19th century decorations, music, hearth cooking, candle-making and a gift shop. A storytime will be held from 5 to 5:30 p.m. Free, but donations accepted.

The ice rink, at Main and Perry streets, opens for ice skating from 2:30 to 7:30 p.m. today and 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday. Saturday events also include a mini-Christmas parade which will carry Santa, a live reindeer display, pony or carriage rides, street musicians, exhibits, food. Also, free children’s movies at 1:30 p.m. at the Wapa Theatre and an 8 p.m. movie at the Armstrong Air and Space Museum.

Annual tree festival begins with an open house from 2 to 4 p.m. Sunday. After that, it will be open during library hours until Dec. 27.

More than 30 organizations have decorated trees that will be on display all of December. Hours are 9 a.m. to noon Thursdays, 6 to 8 p.m. Fridays, 1 to 4 p.m. Saturdays and Sundays. Or, you can call to schedule a viewing time at 419-692-4496.

Holiday Lights at the Fair

Van Wert County Fairgrounds

The Van Wert County 4-H Interstate Exchange Group will host this fourth annual drive-through light show. $5 per vehicle, use the Gate 5 entrance on Fox Road. The light show goes on 6 to 9 p.m. Fridays through Sundays through Christmas Day.

Annual event runs from 6 to 9 p.m. weekends through Dec. 26. Special events include horse-drawn wagon rides 6 to 8 p.m. Dec. 15. Annual Luminary Memorial Service will be after 9 p.m. Dec. 23. Memorials are $20 each until Dec. 7. $5 per vehicle.

St. Marys

St. Marys Winterfest/Festival of Lights

High Street Park

Kicking off with a Santa Parade at 3 p.m. on Sunday, the Winterfest begins. The parade is followed by ice skating, visits with Santa, a live Nativity, food and warming fires. The lights continue with the Festival of Lights from 6 to 9 p.m. Fridays and Saturdays through Dec. 22.


North Pole Express

A quarter-scale train takes passengers past holiday lights and decorations on weekends through Dec. 30. Also, there are HO and Lionel train layouts and a museum. Hours are 6 to 9 p.m. Fridays, 5 to 9 p.m. Saturdays and 5 to 8 p.m. Sundays through Dec. 30. $2 adults, $1 for 12 and younger; free for active duty service members and their families with proof of DOD identification.
