LIMA — Bask in the glow of candles as classical music fills your soul at the Lima Symphony Orchestra’s annual candlelight series. This year, the concert will highlight a variety of composers in its salute to baroque.

The highly embellished music will sound familiar to many concert-goers.

“This really is going to be an extraordinary concert. All of this music is music that people know and love,” said Elizabeth Brown, marketing director for the symphony. Indeed, there is the familiar Theme to Masterpiece Theatre, Pachelbel’s celebrated Canon, and Handel’s Water Music. Also on the bill are works by Bach, Corelli and Mouret.

The only thing missing from this year’s offering is Mozart. In fact, this marks the first year the Lima Symphony Orchestra will perform music other than Mozart at the candlelight concert.

“In the past, we’ve done Mozart, which is wonderful, but we thought there is all this wonderful Baroque music that also fits so well into this type of concert venue. These pieces were written with the same feeling that the Mozart pieces carry,” Brown said.

Always popular with audiences, Brown said the candlelight concerts do offer a unique experience for audiences.

“I always tell people, if you can only come to one concert this season, this is the concert to attend,” Brown said. “The orchestra is closer to the audience, and you’re in a beautiful environment with all these candles glowing. Some people say it’s a very serene feeling, others have told us it’s very romantic, and some have called it almost reverential,” she added.

A new location, Immaculate Conception Church in Ottoville, kicked off the series last week. The two remaining concerts are at two continually popular spots, Trinity United Methodist Church in Lima and St. John Catholic Church in Delphos.
