‚??Somewhere out there,‚?Ě Jonathan Kent (Kevin Costner) says to young Clark Kent (Dylan Sprayberry), ‚??you have another father with another name. He sent you here for a reason; someday you‚??ll find out what that was.‚?Ě In this origins story, Clark discovers who he is ‚?? Kal-El (Henry Cavill) from distant, doomed planet Krypton. Helping him in self-discovery are ‚?? among others ‚?? ‚??Daily Planet‚?Ě reporter Lois Lane (Amy Adams), birth-father Jor-El (Russell Crowe), Kansas mom Martha Kent (Diane Lane), and relentless General Zod (Michael Shannon).
Will Kal-El and Lois Lane get together? Will General Zod find the codex? Will Kal-El reveal his identity? See ‚??Man of Steel‚?Ě if you want answers.
Henry Cavill is rugged and heroic as Kal-El ‚?? Kryptonian man of steel ‚?? but nuanced as his self-doubting, human alter-ego, Clark Kent. Cooper Timberline and Dylan Sprayberry are 9- and 13-year-old Clark, bullied and perplexed. ‚??The world‚??s too big, mom,‚?Ě says 9-year-old Clark. ‚??Make it small.‚?Ě Kevin Costner and Diane Lane are earnest and supportive as Clark‚??s Kansas parents, Jonathan and Martha Kent. Amy Adams is tough, resourceful and smitten reporter Lois Lane who can‚??t let a good story go. ‚??I can do things other people can‚??t,‚?Ě Kal-El tells her. That‚??s enough for Pulitzer-Prize winning Lois.
Others in the large cast include Michael Shannon and Antje Traue as Kryptonian bad couple General Zod and Faora-Ul. ‚??You chose humans over us,‚?Ě single-minded Zod says to Kal-El. ‚??I exist only to serve Krypton.‚?Ě Always reliable Laurence Fishburne is ‚??Daily Planet‚?Ě editor Perry White. Ayelet Zurer plays Kal-El‚??s biological mother, Lara Lor-Van. Christopher Meloni is undaunted Col. Nathan Hardy.
‚??Man of Steel‚?Ě successfully reboots the Superman franchise, languishing since 2006‚??s ‚??Superman Returns.‚?Ě Director Zack Snyder, writer David S. Goyer and actor Henry Cavill give us a superhero who works hard at reconciling other-worldly abilities (incredible strength, X-ray vision, etc.) with human angst, as well as ‚?? especially in its last hour ‚?? non-stop cliff-hangers, noise, explosions, and action. Something for everyone in ‚??MOS‚?Ě ‚?? poignant coming-of-age story, sci-fi adventure, chaste romance, Biblical parallels and special effects. If only it were a bit more fun. This flick takes itself way too seriously.
Rated PG-13 for intense sci-fi violence, action, destruction and some language (Lois Lane is a spunky reporter), ‚??Man of Steel‚?Ě runs a long 143 minutes. So ‚?? should you see it? As the priest says to conflicted Clark, ‚??Sometimes you have to take a leap of faith.‚?Ě
Kal-El is ‚??Man of Steel;‚?Ě
Will you be glad you went?
