TodaySaturdayVAN WERT — Len Archibald loves cinema, and he’s bringing a film event to the area this weekend. The Van Wert Independent Film Festival begins Friday and continues through Sunday. Most events are at Niswonger Performing Arts Center.“Everyone’s invited. This is an event to celebrate cinema and to celebrate cinema in Northwest Ohio,” he said. “I don’t want the film festival to feel like it’s only for artists or it’s an artsy fartsy kind of affair. We’re trying to bring something that’s unique and extraordinary and extravagant and still give value for it.”He has been working since November to finalize films for screening, and he said many of the filmmakers will attend the festival. There are two events, really mini seminars, with filmmakers. Several full-length films and two collections of shorts will be screened.Films will be screened on a high-definition projector, and the audio system in place at Niswonger will enable organizers to turn the hall into a movie house.“People will still be able to get a theater experience,” Archibald said. Saturday’s schedule ends with a social event at the Pitt Stop. A band from Indianapolis, The Vintage Union, will play. Cover charge is $10.Sunday closes the festival with an awards banquet hosted by Shannon O’Neill, 2010 Miss Ohio runner up.“We really tried to create something for everyone, which is what a film festival is about and should be about,” Archibald said. “We want to show people that you can be from Van Wert, Wapakoneta ... and still achieve success as an artist. They think you have to either be from or live in New York, Los Angeles or Chicago to be a success, and that really isn’t the case.”
