LIMA ?? The idea started as a puppy, but by the time Max??s Water Dog Races hits the Allen County Fairgrounds, it??s guaranteed to be a big-dog weekend.

Initiated by Max and Diane McCluer, who have hosted a bi-annual flea market at their Lima farm, it was the close of the Kenton Coon Dog Trials that sparked the idea for the event.

??I checked with our vendors to see if they were even interested in a Labor Day flea market, and before we knew it, the responses got too big for us to house it at our farm. I checked and the Allen County Fairgrounds was available, so we have 800 vendors scheduled to be there this weekend,? McCluer said.

And those vendors, he promises, will have a little bit of everything on hand.

??We??ll have a lot of guns, a lot of dogs, and anything and everything new and old and in-between,? he said.

And then there will be the water dog races. And the dog treeing contests. And the weiner dog races. And of course, the cornhole contest, petting zoo and barnyard bingo.

??People were devastated when Kenton stopped with the coon dog trials. We??ve probably gotten about 90 percent of those people saying they??ll come here,? McCluer said.

Admittedly, he??s surprised by the buzz this first-year event is creating.

??I jumped off the porch, and I??m down with the big dogs now. I??ve got about 100 people helping me out. I really didn??t think it would be this big the first year, but I??m really happy with it,? McCluer said.

And he??s especially happy to bring such an event to Lima.

??This will be a great thing for Lima. This is a million-dollar economic boost to Allen County, and everybody around here is jumping on board and helping out. We just want to make the folks visiting here feel welcome,? he said.
