LIMA — Spend a quarter and help cure breast cancer. That’s the offer being made Saturday when “Quarters for a Cure: Quarter Auction and Bingo” is held at Apollo Career Center.

“This is the first year we’ve ever done this, and we’re hoping to fill the house and raise $4,000 for breast cancer awareness programs,” said Jennifer Mills, marketing director for Shawnee, Lima, Roselawn and Wapakoneta Manors, all of which, along with Office Max, are sponsoring the event.

“We’re doing this to raise breast cancer awareness. In Allen County, there are 120 people out of every 100,000 detected with breast cancer. That’s higher than the national average of 116 out of every 100,000 people. We need to remind people of the importance of early detection,” Mills said.

Participants at this auction pay $5 to purchase a bidding paddle, and a bingo card. From the 17 vendors participating, items will be auctioned that can be won by a quarter and holding up the bidding paddle. “You only bid on what you want to win. And, we have some really interesting things to win,” Mills said.

“We are also going to offer bingo, but a fast-paced version — four corners bingo. It’s a lot of fun,” Mills said.

And for $2 more, participants can bid on a chance to win a grand prize that includes dinner, a night at the Wingate, tickets to the Lima Symphony Orchestra, and free services from Personal Wellness.

“Half of all the money we raise goes to the American Cancer Society’s Making Strides, which is their breast cancer program. The other half goes to the local Breast Cancer Awareness Coalition,” Mills said.
