‚??Nothing‚??s been the same since New York,‚?Ě says Tony Stark, aka Iron Man (Robert Downey Jr.). Although he and other superheroes saved the city in ‚??The Avengers‚?Ě (2012), now Tony‚??s anxiety attacks, chronic insomnia, bad dreams, and irrational conviction that nothing he can do will protect Pepper Potts (Gwyneth Paltrow) threaten to permanently unnerve him. Meanwhile, an Osama-bin-Laden-like terrorist, the Mandarin (Ben Kingsley), has struck nine times, with deadly effect. ‚??Don‚??t worry,‚?Ě he says in a grainy, worldwide broadcast, ‚??the Big One is coming.‚?Ě That‚??s the setup for this third ‚??Iron Man‚?Ě flick.
Where will the Mandarin strike next? Who is Aldrich Killian (Guy Pearce) and what does he want? Can Iron Man save both the President and Pepper Potts? For answers, see noisy, action-packed ‚??Iron Man 3.‚?Ě
Robert Downey Jr. returns as glib Tony Stark/superhero Iron Man. Gwyneth Paltrow is plucky Pepper Potts, Don Cheadle plays stalwart Colonel James Rhodes, and Jon Favreau is security chief Happy Hogan ‚?? all familiar characters to Iron Man fans. New are Ben Kingsley and Guy Pearce as the heavies. Kingsley is fearsome Mandarin in black-and-white video footage. Slow-talking, he wears a thrift-store collage of army boots, fatigues, multiple rings and, looking like the evil emperor in ‚??Star Wars,‚?Ě a hooded cape. ‚??You know who I am,‚?Ě he says, ‚??but you don‚??t know where I am. You‚??ll never see me coming.‚?Ě Guy Pearce is Aldrich Killian, CEO of high-tech Extremis Corp. ‚??We are the next iteration in human evolution,‚?Ě he says.
Others in the cast include Rebecca Hall as enigmatic Maya Hansen, William Sadler as President Ellis, Miguel Ferrer as Vice President Rodriguez, and Ty Simpkins as precocious orphan Harley Keener. Paul Bettany is the voice of Jarvis, one of Stark‚??s many Iron Man suits.
‚??Iron Man 3‚?Ě is a loud, action-filled, comic-book film, fun for fans and full of quirky, deadpan humor. It‚??s got a sometimes surprising script, co-written by director Shane Black and Drew Pearce. The best sequences are an amazing ‚?? and beautiful ‚?? free-fall from Air Force One, and Tony‚??s scenes with smart Harley Keener in Rosehill, Tenn., where a father-son relationship seems to be developing. Tony battles his psychological problems throughout. ‚??We create our own demons,‚?Ě he says, admitting to Pepper that he‚??s been selfish and stupid.
Rated PG-13 for intense action, violence, and brief suggestive content, ‚??Iron Man 3‚?Ě runs 130 minutes. After the grand explosive finale in Miami‚??s mechanized shipping port, stay through the credits for an extra scene that bookends the picture.
Wham! Bam! ‚??Iron Man‚?Ě!
Tony‚??s acting screwy,
Funny talk, lots of noise, then
Everything goes kerflooey.
